If Rover is in the cabin with you

If you have a mini-pooch, and the airline you’re flying with allows him to travel in the cabin, rejoice! This will generally be a far less stressful way for both of you to fly. However, there are still a number of rules and regulation involved. They differ slightly from airline to airline, but they’ll go something like this:

• His carrier should be around 8–10in (20–25cm) high, 12–13in (30–33cm) wide and 17–23in (43–58cm) long (exact measurements vary by airline). Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

• The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you, and it must be stowed there for take-off and landing (and sometimes throughout the entire flight).

• It must have a waterproof bottom and allow for adequate ventilation.

• Soft-sided carriers are a good option, as they can be squished down, with your dog lying down to fit under the seat in front, while allowing more space at other times.

• The carrier will generally count as your carry-on baggage allowance (with most airlines, that means you’ll only be able to bring one small additional piece on board).

• During the flight, you can move your dog’s carrier out so it is under your feet. On some airlines, you can lift the carrier onto your lap, but he can’t come out of the carrier. You can’t even allow his head to stick out (but you can put your hand in to give him a pat or a treat).
